Pikes Peak & The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway

Pikes Peak, also known as "America's Mountain," is one of the most iconic landmarks in Colorado, standing at 14,115 feet above sea level. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast or just someone who loves scenic views, this is a must-visit destination. And there's no better way to experience it than by taking the Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway!

The Cog Railway Experience

The Cog Railway is one of the world’s highest railways and the longest of its kind. Starting in the historic town of Manitou Springs, this train takes you on an unforgettable journey to the summit of Pikes Peak. The ride spans about 9 miles and takes around 3 hours round trip, with plenty of time to explore the summit.

Here’s what you can expect on your trip:

  • Breathtaking Scenery: As the train ascends, you’ll pass through several ecosystems, from lush forests and alpine tundra to rocky cliffs and barren landscapes. Keep an eye out for wildlife like bighorn sheep, marmots, and maybe even a bald eagle soaring above the mountain peaks.
  • Comfort and Relaxation: The Cog Railway is a comfortable way to reach the summit, especially if you’re not up for the hike. The modern trains feature large windows, so everyone gets a great view.
  • Narrated Journey: As you climb, knowledgeable conductors will share fun facts and historical tidbits about the area, the railway’s construction, and the surrounding environment.

At the Summit

Once you reach the top of Pikes Peak, the views will take your breath away—literally and figuratively! On a clear day, you can see as far as Kansas. The famous view from the summit was the inspiration behind the song “America the Beautiful.” Be sure to bring your camera to capture the panoramic landscapes, or simply take a moment to soak in the beauty of the Rocky Mountains.

While you’re at the summit, here are a few things you won’t want to miss:

  • Pikes Peak Summit House: Warm up with some hot chocolate and enjoy the famous Pikes Peak donuts—a treat you can only get at 14,000 feet! The summit house also has a gift shop for souvenirs, snacks, and drinks.
  • Hiking Trails: If you’re feeling adventurous, there are trails at the top where you can explore more of the rugged terrain. Just remember, the air is thin at this altitude, so take it easy and pace yourself.
  • Interactive Displays: Check out the educational exhibits in the newly renovated Summit House to learn more about the mountain's geology, history, and the unique flora and fauna found at such high elevations.

Travel Tips for Visiting Pikes Peak

  • Dress in Layers: Even if it’s warm in Manitou Springs, the weather at the summit can be chilly and unpredictable. It’s not unusual to experience snow at the top, even in summer!
  • Plan for Altitude: At over 14,000 feet, altitude sickness is a possibility. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol before your visit, and take it slow while you’re at the top.
  • Book Your Tickets Early: The Cog Railway is incredibly popular, especially in the summer and fall, so be sure to reserve your tickets ahead of time.
  • Peak Colors in the Fall: Visiting in the autumn? You’ll be treated to stunning fall foliage on the lower slopes, where the aspen trees turn a brilliant gold, contrasting beautifully with the evergreen forests.

Whether you're riding the railway, hiking to the top, or driving up the scenic Pikes Peak Highway, this is an unforgettable experience that will leave you with lasting memories and a deeper appreciation for the natural beauty of Colorado.
